(P. 98 A4). Guidebook – Lucca in a Day. This book is intended as a guidebook that visitors on a day trip to Lucca will find useful. It provides the ideal route that will take you to the most important sights and the most evocative places, so as to give you a sense of how old and beautiful Lucca is. Some information about the people who wrote the history of Lucca will help to bring to life the climate of the times in which they lived. These in particular are the events that involved Castruccio Castracani, Paolo Guinigi, Francesco Burlamacchi, Bishop Frediano, Lucida Mansi and Ilaria del Carretto as well as the Volto Santo and its legend, which together make up a true picture of times past. I have made use of the work done by two people with a rare, genuine love of Lucca, both now, unfortunately, dead. These are Manlio Fulvio (born in San Giorgio a Cremano, Naples, on 15 November 1914, died in Lucca on 12 September 1996) and his Lucca, le sue corti, le sue strade, le sue piazze, published by Società Tipografica Barbieri, Noccioli & C. Empoli, 1968, and Isa Belli Barsali (1920-1986) and her Lucca - Guida alla città, published by Maria Pacini Fazzi, 1988. Complementary to this guidebook are other books and booklets of legends, fairy stories, novels and detective stories, which you can buy on, in pdf format or e-book, at a very reasonable price. With their historical settings and the atmosphere that envelops the characters and places, they will help to enhance your understanding of the very special, reserved spirit of the people who live in Lucca. A stylised but accurate itinerary drawn by designer Mirko Benedetti serves as the introduction, so that visitors can see the position of the places and buildings described. However, Lucca is so small that distances, even when not given, are always short.
